During
my teens and early twenties I watched a lot of kung fu films. The
fight choreography, skills and abilities displayed in Bruce Lee, Jackie
Chan and countless low budget, outrageously scripted and dubbed Asian
movies inspired me to start training on my own. At six in the morning,
after working night shift, I would carry a heavy bag up a local hill,
string it over a tree and punch and kick it for a while.
At around this time I was making kung fu and stick fighting films with
my
friends. None of us had any proper training, but the films were
action-packed and funny, if not technically proficient.
In 1997 I attended an event where Lau Gar kung fu was being demonstrated.
I was impressed, and went to the club the following week. Over the next
few years I learned kung fu, then freestyle kickboxing under many
different instructors.
For the last few years I have been training with John Wilson. I am still
learning new things, but now I also teach. |
